♻️ Turning Waste into Wealth: FSSAI’s RUCO Initiative Gains Traction in Tamil Nadu

In an encouraging step toward sustainability, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)’s Repurpose Used Cooking Oil (RUCO) initiative is witnessing strong participation across Tamil Nadu.

A shining example comes from Tiruvanaikovil-based start-up, kB Energy Corporation, which is leading the change by collecting used cooking oil from over 2,000 restaurants, sweet manufacturers, catering units, hospitals, and educational institutions across Tiruchi, Dindigul, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai districts.

With the festive season around the corner, the company has already gathered close to 30 tonnes of used cooking oil — nearly double the regular monthly collection. This oil is repurposed into biofuel, creating a valuable energy source while preventing unsafe reuse in food preparation.

“After a slow start, used oil collection has become competitive, creating jobs for young entrepreneurs and spreading awareness about the health hazards of reused cooking oil,” says Kishore Kumar Baskaran, Founder & Proprietor, kB Energy Corporation.

FSSAI and the Biodiesel Association of India authorize such aggregators to ensure safe collection and traceability. Consumers are also being encouraged to buy festive sweets and snacks from FSSAI-certified vendors with valid Hygiene Rating Certificates.

सततता (Sustainability) को बढ़ावा देने की दिशा में, भारतीय खाद्य सुरक्षा और मानक प्राधिकरण (FSSAI) की रीपर्पज़ यूज़्ड कुकिंग ऑयल (RUCO) पहल को तमिलनाडु के विभिन्न ज़िलों में व्यापक समर्थन मिल रहा है।

इस बदलाव की एक प्रेरक मिसाल है तिरुवनैकोविल स्थित स्टार्टअप, kB Energy Corporation, जो 2,000 से अधिक रेस्तरां, मिठाई निर्माता, कैटरिंग यूनिट, अस्पताल और शैक्षणिक संस्थानों से इस्तेमाल किया गया तेल एकत्र कर रही है। यह पहल तिरुची, डिंडीगुल, पुदुकोट्टई, तंजावुर, तिरुवरूर, नागपट्टिनम और मयिलाडुथुरै ज़िलों में सक्रिय है।

आने वाले त्योहारों के मौसम को देखते हुए, कंपनी ने इस साल अब तक लगभग 30 टन इस्तेमाल किया हुआ तेल एकत्र किया है — जो सामान्य महीने की तुलना में लगभग दोगुना है। यह तेल बायोफ्यूल में परिवर्तित किया जाता है, जिससे ऊर्जा का एक मूल्यवान स्रोत बनता है और साथ ही खाना पकाने में तेल के असुरक्षित पुन: उपयोग को भी रोका जाता है।

kB Energy Corporation के संस्थापक एवं स्वामी किशोर कुमार भास्करन ने बताया —

“शुरुआत में धीमी रफ्तार के बाद अब इस्तेमाल किए गए तेल का संग्रह प्रतिस्पर्धात्मक हो गया है, जिससे युवा उद्यमियों के लिए रोजगार के अवसर बन रहे हैं और बार-बार इस्तेमाल किए जाने वाले तेल से होने वाले स्वास्थ्य जोखिमों के प्रति जागरूकता बढ़ रही है।”

FSSAI और बायोडीज़ल एसोसिएशन ऑफ इंडिया द्वारा अधिकृत ये एग्रीगेटर सुरक्षित संग्रहण और ट्रेसबिलिटी सुनिश्चित करते हैं। उपभोक्ताओं से भी अपील की गई है कि वे केवल FSSAI प्रमाणित विक्रेताओं से ही अपनी त्योहारी मिठाइयाँ और नमकीन खरीदें, जिनके पास मान्य हाइजीन रेटिंग सर्टिफिकेट हो।
