Russia eyes more sunflower oil exports to India

Russia, the world's largest sunflower oil producer, is making a strategic push into the Indian edible oil market. With record production and shifting global dynamics, the Russia-India trade partnership is poised to reach new heights, extending beyond energy to agriculture.
Why the Shift? 🤔
1. Ukrainian Supply Diversion: Ukrainian sunflower oil is increasingly heading to Europe, creating a clear opportunity for Russia to step up and meet the strong demand in India.
2. Record Russian Output: Russian farmers are planting more oilseeds, shifting away from less profitable wheat. This surge means Russia is projected to export a record 5 million metric tons of sunflower oil in 2025/26 (IKAR).
3. Strategic Diplomacy: A high-level Russian delegation, led by Deputy PM Dmitry Patrushev, recently met with PM Narendra Modi at the World Food India exhibition. The message was clear: Russia has the capacity to supply more sunflower oil, grains, and legumes.
India: Russia's Key Customer
India is already a vital customer, accounting for about one-third of Russia's current sunflower oil exports.
As the world’s biggest importer of edible oils, India's appetite is huge. Despite geopolitical pressures, trade ties with Moscow are deepening. The U.S. tariff on Indian goods is nudging New Delhi to further diversify its partnerships, making Russian imports even more attractive. An Indian government official confirmed the country is open to buying more Russian sunflower oil.
Beyond Oil: A Broader Partnership 🌾
The growing cooperation isn't limited to oils.
Peas and Legumes: Russia was India’s second-largest supplier of peas last year, exporting 0.8 million tons.
BRICS Grain Exchange: Moscow has proposed creating a BRICS grain exchange. While still an idea, it signals a long-term strategy to reduce dependence on global commodity traders and secure fair pricing for members, cementing agricultural collaboration with India.
The Outlook: A New Phase in Trade 🚀
With record output, strategic outreach, and massive Indian demand, Russia is perfectly positioned to capture a much larger share of the market. The 2025/26 season could mark a new and significant phase in agri-trade cooperation, transforming the economic relationship between these two global players.

दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा सूरजमुखी तेल उत्पादक रूस अब भारत के खाद्य तेल बाज़ार में अपनी पकड़ मजबूत करने की रणनीतिक तैयारी कर रहा है। रिकॉर्ड उत्पादन और बदलते वैश्विक हालातों के बीच, रूस-भारत की व्यापारिक साझेदारी ऊर्जा से आगे बढ़कर कृषि तक नए मुकाम हासिल करने को तैयार है।

यूक्रेनी आपूर्ति में बदलाव: यूक्रेनी सूरजमुखी तेल अब यूरोपीय बाज़ारों की ओर जा रहा है, जिससे भारत की मज़बूत मांग को पूरा करने के लिए रूस के सामने बड़ा अवसर है।
रूसी उत्पादन का रिकॉर्ड स्तर: रूसी किसान अब कम लाभदायक गेहूँ की बजाय तिलहनों की खेती की ओर बढ़ रहे हैं। इस बदलाव से 2025/26 सीज़न में रूस से सूरजमुखी तेल का निर्यात रिकॉर्ड 50 लाख टन तक पहुँचने का अनुमान है (IKAR)।
रणनीतिक कूटनीति: रूस के उप प्रधानमंत्री दिमित्री पत्रुशेव के नेतृत्व में एक उच्च स्तरीय प्रतिनिधिमंडल ने हाल ही में नई दिल्ली में प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी से मुलाकात की। संदेश साफ था—रूस सूरजमुखी तेल, अनाज और दलहन की आपूर्ति बढ़ाने की क्षमता रखता है।
भारत: रूस का प्रमुख ग्राहक 🇮🇳
भारत पहले से ही रूस का एक अहम ग्राहक है और वर्तमान सूरजमुखी तेल निर्यात का लगभग एक-तिहाई हिस्सा खरीदता है।
दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा खाद्य तेल आयातक होने के नाते भारत की मांग विशाल है। भू-राजनीतिक दबावों के बावजूद, भारत और रूस के व्यापारिक रिश्ते गहरे हो रहे हैं। अमेरिकी सरकार द्वारा भारतीय उत्पादों पर 50% टैरिफ लगाए जाने के बाद, नई दिल्ली अपने साझेदारों में विविधता लाने की ओर बढ़ रहा है, जिससे रूसी आयात और भी आकर्षक बन रहे हैं। एक भारतीय सरकारी अधिकारी ने पुष्टि की कि देश रूस से अधिक सूरजमुखी तेल खरीदने को तैयार है।
तेल से आगे: व्यापक साझेदारी 🌾
भारत-रूस का बढ़ता सहयोग केवल तेल तक सीमित नहीं है।
मटर और दलहन: पिछले साल रूस भारत का दूसरा सबसे बड़ा मटर आपूर्तिकर्ता रहा, जिसने 8 लाख टन मटर भारत को निर्यात किए।
ब्रिक्स ग्रेन एक्सचेंज: रूस ने एक BRICS अनाज एक्सचेंज बनाने का प्रस्ताव रखा है। यह अभी विचार स्तर पर है, लेकिन संकेत साफ है—BRICS देशों को वैश्विक कमोडिटी ट्रेडर्स पर निर्भरता कम करनी चाहिए और निष्पक्ष मूल्य सुनिश्चित करना चाहिए।
आगे का रास्ता: व्यापार का नया चरण 🚀
रिकॉर्ड उत्पादन, रणनीतिक पहुंच और भारत की विशाल मांग के साथ, रूस भारतीय बाज़ार में कहीं बड़ी हिस्सेदारी हासिल करने की मज़बूत स्थिति में है। 2025/26 का सीज़न कृषि-व्यापार सहयोग का नया और अहम चरण साबित हो सकता है, जो इन दो वैश्विक शक्तियों के आर्थिक रिश्तों को और गहरा करेगा।
