Khammam: Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao on Monday called upon farmers to shift focus towards profitable and sustainable crops

Telangana’s Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has urged farmers to shift their focus toward more profitable and sustainable crops, particularly oil palm cultivation, to improve incomes and strengthen rural livelihoods.

Speaking at Lachiram Tanda in Raghunathapalem mandal after laying the foundation for development works worth ₹2.95 crore, the Minister highlighted the benefits of diversifying into oil palm.

Oil Palm – A Lucrative Option for Farmers

According to Nageswara Rao, oil palm cultivation offers a high return on investment along with strong government support.

  • ₹50,000 per acre subsidy for oil palm plantations

  • Additional incentives for intercrops such as chillies, cotton, and vegetables

  • Support for drip irrigation systems to ensure water efficiency

  • Earnings potential up to ₹2 lakh per acre once crops are established

“This is a win-win opportunity for farmers — better incomes, sustainable practices, and government backing,” the Minister said.

Infrastructure Development in the Region

During his visit, Nageswara Rao also launched several key infrastructure projects:

  • Repair and reconstruction of the BT road from Lachiram Tanda to Eerlapudi at a cost of ₹2.15 crore

  • Construction of a bridge between Lachiram Tanda and Donabanda at a cost of ₹80 lakh

These works are expected to improve connectivity and benefit local farmers by easing transport of produce.

Ensuring Water Security

The Minister assured farmers that steps would be taken to fill tanks and irrigation sources even during summer, preventing crop losses due to water scarcity. This move is aimed at enabling year-round cultivation.

Housing for the Poor – Indiramma Scheme

Reiterating the State government’s commitment to social welfare, Nageswara Rao said that Indiramma houses are being allotted in a phased manner.

“No eligible person will be left without a home. We are committed to sanctioning Indiramma houses for every deserving poor family,” he emphasized.

Takeaway

The push for oil palm cultivation in Telangana reflects the government’s strategy to create sustainable income sources for farmers while supporting rural development through infrastructure and housing schemes. With strong subsidies and assured irrigation support, oil palm could become a game-changer for the farming community.
